  • Good news for the new car market

Private new-car registrations better than pre-recession levels

    • May is the 15th consecutive month of growth for the new-car market
    • Ford are still dominating the British market.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has today announced that more private cars were registered in May this year than in May 2007 – before the recession hit. Private registrations totalled 84,898, compared to 81,142 private new cars registered in the same month in 2007. The overall market, while still not quite up to with pre-recession levels, saw its 15th consecutive month of growth.

Once again, the Ford Fiesta claimed the honours as the top-selling car in Britain last month. Second was the Ford Focus, followed by the Vauxhall Corsa, Volkswagen Golf and Vauxhall Astra. This top 5 is replicated in the year-to-date figures, although the Astra is fourth and the Golf comes in fifth.
