Shocking van safety survey

Van operators have been urged to consider leasing, rather than buying their vehicles after a safety survey produced shocking results. Data collected by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) concluded that half of all vans more than three years old in use today are unroadworthy. Now leading hire company Europcar is urging businesses to consider van hire as a cost-effective, flexible, and most importantly, safe alternative to running a fleet of older vans. The study by the FTA revealed an almost 50 per cent failure rate on first time MOTs for vans. The figures prove a fact known within the industry for a long time – businesses are holding onto vans for longer, without having them properly maintained. “This is a false economy for businesses at a time when costs are all important – as eventually the vans will either break down or fail their MOT,” With the costs of running and maintaining a fleet of vans on the rise, could the market have changed to such an extent that leasing all or part of your fleet is now preferable to ownership?
